The last session was on "Plastics and Sustainable Building: Research and E-learning". Dechema e.V. and the ISC3 presented the findings of their studies about the use of plastics in the construction sector. The session was moderated by Jens Krol (ISC3) and Cecilia Wandiga (CSTI).
Oleg Ditkovskiy (ISC3) presented ISC3’s report on "Plastics and Sustainable Building", a study involving experts from science, public authorities, NGOs, and industry to address important questions on this topic. He emphasized the need to consider key sustainability factors like climate, health, environment, and affordability, despite the appealing characteristics and potential for sustainable growth of plastics when managed properly.
Katja Wendler (DECHEMA e.V.) provided insights on research projects aiming to close the loop for plastics used e.g. for insulation materials, engaging all stakeholders. By analysing regions and creating a transferable model, the objective is to implement a circular value chain. This approach could significantly reduce waste, CO2 emissions, and incineration costs in Europe, while improving resource utilization and minimizing environmental impact.
At the end of the session, the ISC3 launched its E-learning course on the topic"Plastics and Sustainable Building". This interactive course is freely available on GIZ’s E-learning platform Atingi and covers topics such as urbanisation, affordable housing, climate, health, environment and the SDG’s.
